Our Materials

Natural, durable, and chosen with purpose

At Elderstone Saunas, every material we use is hand-selected not just for its beauty, but for its performance, sustainability, and the way it makes you feel.

Each sauna is a balance of strength, warmth, and intention — crafted from locally sourced, high-performance materials that are designed to last for decades and sit effortlessly within natural landscapes

Charred Timber: Beauty in Burnt Wood

We use the ancient Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban to char the timber that clads the front of our saunas — particularly in models like The Otto. This process enhances the wood’s natural durability and gives it a striking, architectural finish. The result? A beautiful, bold exterior that requires minimal maintenance and resists weathering for years

Powder-Coated Steel: A Modern Contrast

To balance the warmth of natural wood, we wrap the side and rear elevations in black powder-coated steel. This durable finish protects the structure while adding a modern, minimalist edge that complements natural surroundings — from deep woodland to landscaped gardens.

Thermally Modified Ash: A Calm, Long-Lasting Interior

Inside, you’ll find thermally modified ash, chosen for its smooth finish, rich tone, and exceptional resistance to moisture and heat. These floating benches are built in two tiers for comfort, creating the perfect environment to stretch out, relax, and unwind.

Natural Sheep’s Wool Insulation: Local and Breathable

We insulate our saunas using locally sourced sheep’s wool — a completely natural, breathable material that regulates heat and moisture while offering superb thermal performance. It’s a healthier choice for you and the planet, with none of the synthetic off-gassing found in conventional insulations.
